Bhimashankar, located about 125 kilometers from Pune district in Maharashtra, is nestled amidst dense forests and rugged hills. The Legend of Demon Bhima and Shiva’s Manifestation

In the Treta Yuga, the demon Bhima, who was the son of Kumbhakarna, bore hatred towards Shiva. Burning with vengeance, he performed penance and obtained a boon from Brahma, after which his atrocities shook the earth. He imprisoned a king who refused to stop worshiping Shiva. When Bhima struck the Shiva Linga, Shiva himself appeared — ended Bhima’s reign, and resided there in the form of a Jyotirlinga. That very place is today known as Bhimashankar.

Tripurasura and the Divine Battle

According to another mysterious legend, the demon Tripurasura, having gained the boon of immortality, spread terror across the world. Then Shiva, along with Goddess Parvati, ended him. In remembrance of that epic battle, this temple was established.

The architecture of the Bhimashankar temple is a beautiful blend of Nagara and Indo-Aryan styles. Its sanctum is built lower into the earth, where the self-manifested Shiva Linga is located.
